Description: This course will provide officers with the necessary knowledge and skills to safely and effectively respond to opioid drug overdoses.  This course will educate officers how to preserve the crime scene of a drug overdose, gather information, conduct witness interviews, and collect evidence to determine the circumstances leading to the overdose.  There will also be instruction on post scene investigation techniques, conducting suspect interviews, and the arrest process and prosecution of drug distributors.  

Course Objectives:

Students will know how to recognize a drug overdose and understand why the individual overdosed.

Students will learn how to look for basic leads, how to maintain crime scene integrity and proper evidence collection, which is critical during an investigation.

Students will know which Personal Protective Equipment is best for conducting an overdose scene investigation and how to protect themselves from an opioid exposure when responding to a drug overdose.

They will learn the legal authority utilized when searching an overdose scene.

They will know what to do with the overdose victims’ electronic devices (cell phones, computers, tablets, watches) to make sure that no data is lost.

Students will know the best techniques for conducting an interview of witnesses & family members in an effort to identify the dealer/distributor.

Students will know how to conduct an interview of a drug distributor, what questions to ask, in an effort to establish they are a distributor.

Students will know when they should arrest the suspect during the investigation.

Students will know based upon the various laws of their state, what charges should be filed.

They will know how to work with a prosecutor to obtain a successful prosecution.
